Importance of Durga Puja Festival for Bengal and Bengalis

The Bengali community considers Mother Durga’s arrival on earth from this day itself. Pooja of Navratri starts from the second day. 5 days later, on the day of Shashthi, Durga Maa sits in the houses due to belavana. But, this time, after 35 days of Mahalaya, there will be a bailout and the mother will visit the homes. However, this is not the first time this has happened.

Bengali people eagerly wait for Mahalaya. Actually Mahalaya is considered to be the beginning of Durga Puja and the end of Pitrupaksha. On this day, Mother Durga is prayed to come to the earth. Although Mahalaya comes seven days before Durga Puja, but this year due to more months, it will come a month later i.e. on October 17. Therefore, the festival of worship of Goddess Durga will be celebrated from October 17 to October 25 this year.

What is ‘Pandal’ ?

A ‘Pandal’ is kind of a place where people keep the idol of Goddess Durga. All the rituals and prayers take place inside the pandal. Pandals are generally set up before the Durga Puja begins.

Significance of Durga Puja

There are many stories related to Durga Puja. It is believed that Goddess Durga killed the demon named Mahishasura on this day, who became very powerful after getting the blessing of Lord Brahma. Bramha ji gave Mahishasura the boon that no god or demon can conquer him. After getting a boon, he started harassing the gods in heaven and terrorized the earth too. He made a sudden attack in heaven and defeated Indra and captured heaven. Distressed, all Devs reached out to Trimurti Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh for help.

All the gods fought together to defeat him, but he was defeated. When no remedy was found, the Gods created Goddess Durga for her destruction which is also known as Shakti and Parvati. Goddess Durga attacked Mahishasura for nine days and killed her on the tenth day. On this occasion, the Hindus celebrate the festival of Durga Puja, the tenth day is known as Vijayadashami.
